This year: Rumor has it that our famous IRS (US chicken businesses only) is looking a bit more closely at 'expenses' on 1040 returns. That "seminar" to Las Vegas may end up costing you some bucks if your records show more time at the casino and there wasn't a convention during the time frame you state.
Listen up - People who work for the IRS are not stupid. Convinced everybody is a little bit crooked...yeah.
The weasels out there telling you their one of a kind seminar, workshop, course or book is tax deductible - don't take their word for it! Unless they are willing to go with you to an audit or worse be your cell mate - Call your local tax office and get the facts BEFORE you spend your money! Don't get....stuck, in more areas than you can count!
On the same topic - you'll see ads for those instant refunds. Unless you are minutes away from being evicted - wait the 2 weeks for your refund. Why? Because many people find that the 'refund they thought they were going to get - turns out to be much less than the instant refund they got! Which means: You now have a new loan! Fun idea isn't it.
Finally, do it yourself Turbo Tax or go to H&R Block?.
It Depends Here's a good way to decide: Can you balance your checkbook? Not! Let a reputable tax service with a guarantee crunch the numbers.
Absolutely Yes! Then grab Turbo Tax or Kiplingers Tax Cut and go for it!
I like Turbo Tax personally and use it every year because it automatically updates any IRS changes without my thinking about it.
In 2006 the IRS made 40 revisions between January 1st and April 15th - Turbo Tax updated itself and adjusted my return. I didn't pick up one friggin publication!
That's it for now and I leave you with this
There will always be death and taxes;
however, death doesn't get worse every year.--anonymous
